Dream It, Plan It, Do It: Mastering Goal Setting for Success
Ever find yourself dreaming about a better future but feeling stuck on how to get there? You’re not alone. We’ve all had goals—big and small—that feel exciting in theory but overwhelming in practice.
But here’s the thing: turning your dreams into reality isn’t about luck or talent. It’s about mastering the art of goal setting. With a clear plan, actionable steps, and a little perseverance, you can achieve just about anything.
I’ve had my share of big dreams—launching my blog, creating journals, building a community for women—and trust me, the journey wasn’t always smooth. But every step, misstep, and win taught me one thing: success starts with a plan. So today, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned about setting (and smashing) goals so you can do the same.

Let’s dive in!
Why Goal Setting Matters
Setting goals isn’t just about having a to-do list or ticking boxes. It’s about creating a roadmap for your life. Goals give you clarity, direction, and purpose. They’re a reminder of what you’re working toward, even when things get tough.
Here’s why goal setting is so powerful:
1. Clarity: Goals help you focus on what truly matters. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by “everything,” you know exactly where to direct your energy.
2. Motivation: When you have a goal, you’re more likely to take action, even on days when you don’t feel like it.
3. Accountability: Goals keep you on track and help you measure your progress.
4. Growth: Every goal you achieve boosts your confidence and shows you what you’re capable of.
Simply put, goal setting is the bridge between dreaming and doing.
Dream It: The Power of Visualization
Before you can achieve your goals, you need to know what they are. This starts with dreaming. Allow yourself to think big, imagine possibilities, and explore what you truly want.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
• What does my dream life look like?
• What excites me, inspires me, or makes me feel alive?
• What do I want to accomplish this year, in five years, or in my lifetime?
One tool that’s been life-changing for me is visualization. Picture yourself achieving your goal. Imagine how it feels, what your day looks like, and who’s celebrating with you. This mental exercise isn’t just motivational—it’s proven to strengthen your commitment to your goals.
Tip: Create a vision board! Whether it’s digital (Pinterest is your best friend) or physical (hello, magazines and glue sticks), having a visual reminder of your dreams can keep you inspired.
Plan It: Breaking Down Your Goals
Dreaming is fun, but without a plan, dreams stay dreams. This is where goal setting comes into play.
SMART Goals
One of the best ways to set goals is to make them SMART:
• Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Be as detailed as possible.
• Measurable: How will you track your progress?
• Achievable: Is this goal realistic given your current resources and timeline?
• Relevant: Does this goal align with your values and long-term vision?
• Time-bound: What’s your deadline?
Here’s an example: Instead of saying, “I want to save money,” set a SMART goal like, “I will save $5,000 for a vacation by December 31 by putting $500 into a savings account every month.”
Break It Down
Big goals can feel overwhelming, so break them into smaller, manageable steps. Think of these as your mini-goals or milestones.
For example, if your goal is to write a book:
1. Outline the chapters.
2. Write 500 words a day.
3. Edit one chapter a week.
4. Submit the manuscript by a specific date.
Each small step brings you closer to the big win!
Tip: Use a planner, journal, or goal-setting app to track your milestones. My Unleash Your Potential journal is perfect for this—it’s designed to help you stay organized, motivated, and on track.
Do It: Turning Plans into Action
This is the hardest (but most rewarding) part: taking action. Here’s how to make sure you stick to your goals and see them through.
Create a Routine
Habits are the building blocks of success. If you can turn your goal into a daily or weekly habit, you’re much more likely to achieve it.
For example, if your goal is to exercise more, schedule your workouts at the same time every day. Treat it like an appointment you can’t miss.
Stay Flexible
Life happens, and plans change. That’s okay. The key is to adapt without giving up. If something isn’t working, adjust your approach—but never lose sight of your goal.
Celebrate Your Wins
Don’t wait until you’ve reached the finish line to celebrate. Every small win—every milestone—is worth acknowledging. Celebrating your progress keeps you motivated and reminds you why you started.
Tip: Reflect on your journey by journaling. My Self Love Journal is perfect for capturing your wins, learning from challenges, and staying motivated.
Overcoming Common Goal-Setting Challenges
Let’s be real: setting goals is easier than achieving them. Here are some common roadblocks—and how to overcome them:
1. Procrastination: Break your goal into smaller tasks, and tackle one at a time. Use a timer (try the Pomodoro technique) to stay focused.
2. Self-Doubt: Replace negative self-talk with affirmations like, “I am capable,” “I am strong,” and “I can do this.”
3. Lack of Motivation: Revisit your “why.” Why is this goal important to you?
4. Fear of Failure: Remember, failure is part of the process. Every setback is a lesson in disguise.
My Personal Goal-Setting Journey
A few years ago, I set a goal to create products that inspire women to live their best lives. It started with a dream: helping others through journaling and personal development.
At first, it felt overwhelming. How would I design the journals? Would anyone even buy them? But I broke the process into small steps—researching, designing, marketing—and stayed consistent. Today, I’m proud to offer tools like Empowered & Awesome and Owning My Whole Self that empower women like you.
This journey taught me that no goal is too big when you have a plan and believe in yourself.
